A modern, inviting and busy Union Station is essential to Washington DC, the region and the entire country as the seat of government. The effort to rally public support for The Nation’s Station began with the Federal City Council and has since grown to include a broad coalition of businesses, nonprofit organizations, individuals and residents who want to see the project completed. A fully realized vision for The Nation’s Station is only possible through a significant investment of funds from the federal government, and the Alliance is focused on getting that commitment from the President and Congress.
Union Station is the only federally owned train station in the country.
America’s 2nd busiest rail station serving over 37 million passengers annually*

THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW

2040 Passenger Capacity Growth:
Amtrak: 95% increase
MARC: 151% increase
VRE: 249% increase

The estimated $10.5 billion expansion project will preserve the historic station and includes the complete reconstruction of 25 acres of tracks and platforms, a new train hall, three new passenger concourses, a new bus station, expanded pick-up and drop-off facilities, and better connections to transit services to enable fast, electrified, modernized rail service for the next century.

The project will address the critical state of repair for longstanding safety, security, and access deficiencies for individuals with disabilities, and modernize facilities to more than double capacity for rail.

The expansion catalyzes 3 million sq ft in associated air rights development.

Developing adjacent air space above the rail yard will create opportunities for building more affordable housing units and stimulate inclusive growth in the surrounding neighborhoods, energizing substantial economic growth.
The return on investment will bring an estimated $355 million to $851 million in annual tax revenue.
The expansion will create

67,000 jobs

The project has full stakeholder support.

Stakeholders of the project include local and regional government leaders in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, as well as countless business and civic leaders.
The DC Government is committing $250M to replace the H Street Bridge facilitating the rail yard’s reconstruction.
